What is an AVIF file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) uses the AV1 video codec to compress still images. It's part of the HEIF family and can produce files significantly smaller than JPG or even WebP at comparable quality.

Why can't I open an AVIF file?

Support for AVIF depends on your software. Most modern browsers and recent photo apps can read it, but older programs, some email clients, and many image editors cannot. When you receive an AVIF file that won't open, converting it to JPG is the simplest fix.
